Biography

Alexander Watt was born at Jamberoo on the 11th of September, 1852, and baptised at Wollongong on the 3rd of October.[1] He was the son of Scottish immigrants Alexander Bryce and Isabella Watt.

Alexander married Agnes Fisher in Sydney on the 29th of March, 1881.[2][3]

He died at Toowoomba Hospital on the 8th of July, 1939.[4] He was buried in the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery.[5]

Mr. Alexander Bryce, a Maleny pioneer, has died at the age of 86. Born on the South Coast of New South Wales, deceased came to the Maleny district nearly 40 years ago. His wife died 20 years ago. He leaves one son, Mr. A. J. Bryce (Maleny) and two daughters, Mrs. Higgins (Wyreema) and Miss Bryce (Cambooya).

A former resident of this district in the personage of Mr. Alexander Bryce died at Toowoomba hospital on the 8th inst. at the great age of 86 years. The late Mr. Bryce, many years ago, resided at Killarney (St. George's Basin), and later removed to Richmond River, where he carried on farming, and later still went to Maleny (Q.) following farming, and he thence removed to Cambooya, Darling Downs, where he went in for mixed farming — dairying and wheat — where he resided up till the time of his death. His wife pre-deceased him a considerable time ago, and in family leaves one son, Alex. (Maleny), and two daughters, Lizzie and Belle. The deceased was a member of the old pioneering stock, born at Jamberoo, he came with his parents as a boy to take up residence at Errowel, one of a family of 12. He was one of the old type, a true Scotchman, a faithful member of his church, and elder of the Presbyterian Church for many years. The interment took place at Toowoombah on Monday last week.

Research Notes

His last property, at Cambooya, was called Whitburn after his parents' birthplace.[7]
