Ellen was born Helen Buchanan on the 16th of June, 1838, at Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.[1], the 8th of 14 children of Thomas Buchanan and Margaret Graham.

At 11, on the 25th of June, 1849, her brother Thomas was born in Princess Street, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
At 14, on the 10th of January, 1853, her sister Mary was born at Halfway Bush, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
In the years before her marriage to William, she knew what it was to walk to Dunedin, a distance of fifteen miles over roadless country. She related that on the return trip, she was somewhat confused at one point in the area near North Taieri where two tracks crossed. There she met a man whom she asked for directions. "She'll keep on and she'll come when she'll see like she'll see a man but she'll not be a man, she'll be a cabbage tree and she'll keep the footpath under she's foot," was the reply of her Highland guide.[3]
At 28, on Friday 16 November, 1866, she married William Grant at "Clairinch", West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[4]
At 29, on the 15th of November, 1867, her son Charles was born, in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 31, on the 31st of July, 1869, her daughter Margaret was born, in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 32, on the 25th of May, 1871, her son William was born, in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 34, on the 8th of October, 1874, her son John was born in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 35, on the 31st of May, 1874, her brother John died, in North Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 33.
At 36, on the 27th of September, 1874, her son Arthur was born in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
AT 37, on the 27th of March, 1876, her sister Jessie died, in Tapanui, Otago, New Zealand, at 30.
At 38, on the 4th of July, 1876, her son Robert was born, in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 38, on the 16th of July, 1876, her father Thomas died, in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 72.
AT 40, on the 20th of March, 1879, her son Edwin was born in Tokomairiro, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand.
At 41, on the 20th of November, 1879, her brother Thomas died, at Clairinch Farm, West Taieri, Otago,, New Zealand.

At 46, on the 22nd of June, 1884, her mother Margaret died in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand,, at 77. [6]
At 58, on the 2nd of October, 1896, her sister Margaret died, in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, at 70.
At 62, on the 17th of January, 1901, her brother Robert died, in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 72.
At 74, on the 7th of November, 1912, her husband William died, in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 76.
