Biography
John George Buchanan was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland, where his father Edward Buchanan ran a building company. [1]
His family; Edward Buchanan, his wife Elizabeth and children; Elizabeth, Ann, James, Edward and John Buchanan emigrated via London, to New Zealand in the ship Gananoque, arriving in Auckland 18th October 1861 with John Buchanan, his wife Margaret (Smellie) Buchanan and their children Jane and Andrew Buchanan . Also travelling with them was Agnes Rankin Smellie who later married their brother George Buchanan. [2][3]
The death has occurred of Mr. John George Buchanan, a resident of Devonport for the past 46 years, at the age of 71 years. Born in Scotland, he came to New Zealand as a child of two years with his parents in the ship Gananoque, which left London on July 7, 1861 and arrived at Auckland on October 18th. Among the passengers were the late Mr. David Nathan and his family.
Educated in Auckland, Mr. Buchanan served his apprenticeship at the jeweller's trade, and later commenced business on his own account. The business eventually became Buchanan and Company Limited, but shortly after the war the concern was voluntarily wound up, Mr. Buchanan and his sons taking over the manufacturing section.
Mr. Buchanan was a member of the A Battery, R.N.Z.A. and was also in the Artillery Band. He was a prominent rifle shot, a foundation member of the Devonport Orphans' Club, and a prominent member of the Devonport Bowling Club, having presented the Buchanan shield for percentage fours.
Mr. Buchanan was predeceased by his wife 10 years ago and is survived by five daughters and three sons. They are Mesdames G. Bailey, of Sydney, E. Ryan, H. L. Ogden and J. R. Miller of Devonport, W. O. Gash of Takapuna and Messrs. Edward, George and John Buchanan, all of Devonport. Tho funeral took place at O'Neill's Point cemetery on Tuesday.
