Biography

John Buck was likely born about 1627 based on the birth of his first daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1653. He may have been the son of James Buck of Hingham.^[1]

John Buck was in Scituate by 1650, and as "Cornet of the Troopers" fought in the Indian wars. He was the first proprietor of Walnut Tree Hill, in 1651.^[1]

According to Deane (see source below) John's wife was Elizabeth (Holbrook) of Weymouth, daughter of Samuel.^[1] However, Torrey, in New England Marriages to 1700, says that the name of John's wife, married in Scituate by 1653 was "Susan? _____ (not Elizabeth HOLBROOK)".^[2] John married his first wife by 1653 in Scituate, Massachusetts.

John married second, Sarah (Faunce), widow of Edward Doty on August 26, 1693. ^[4]

John Buck's will was dated 4 September 1697^[1] and proved on 27 September 1697 in Plymouth. He mentions his daughter Chandler, Isaac Randall's children, John Garets's children, grandchildren at Yarmouth and Sandwich, and his son-in-law Isaac Randall. His inventory was taken on 21 September 1697.^[5]

Notes

The History of Scituate itentifies the father of John and Isaac as James of Hingham. This is unlikely because that James did not arrive in Massachusetts until 1638. There is no record of John and Isaac being born in England and arriving in Massachusetts.
