Research notes

  • to do: Naturalization? 1900 census[3] mentions it

Andrew?

The profile had his second name as "Andrew", although it can be found in none of the sources.

Second name "Andrew" is just from family tradition. His youngest son is Louis Andrew Budd and family tradition had him as a "junior" even though his name isn't on any records that way. Robinson-27225 19:30, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

A letter from his grandchild Mildred E (Melvin) Galbraith claims that his birthday was on 27 November 1829.[1]

His gravestone also has his birth year as 1829.[24]

Birthday

While the letter from his grandchild Mildred E (Melvin) Galbraith states his birthday as 27 November 1829,[1] the 1900 census, which was the only one that had the enumerators ask for year and month of birth, suggests December 1829.

Origin

As visible in the table above, all official sources claim Germany. Only exception is the 1870 census, which has his birth place as "Prussia".[7]

The same 1870 census states his wife's origin as Hesse-Darmstadt, which is correct, since Frischborn, her birth place, belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, also known as Hesse-Darmstadt. The 1967 grandchild letter claims Frischborn was in Hessse-Waldeck.[1]

May it be that she confused the states of origin for her grandparents? Karl Thomas created a compilation of people who had their emigration announced in the official newspaper "Fürstlich Waldeckisches Regierungs-Blatt", for their creditors to be able to claim potential debt before those people left the country. His index contains exactly one Ludwig Budde. He was from Herbsen, a son of Wilhelm Budde, and had his emigration to America announced on 15 May 1854.[25]

This Ludwig, whose year of emigration fits exactly to the passenger list[2], was born on the 18th of December 1829 and baptized on the 26th or 28th. His parents were said Wilhelm Budde and his wife Louise née Rest.[26] Not only do month and year of birth fit the 1900 census,[3] but can the names of the parents be found among the names of the children of this Louis. Are these too many coincidences?

  • to do: get newspaper announcement

Sticking with the idea of Ludwig being from Hesse, searching for Budde emigrants at the LAGIS database of Hessian National Archives, yields two records about the same Ludwig Budde, who emigrated to America in 1854. He was a cloth maker from "Homberg". [27][28] Those records are probably about Ludwig Budde (1805-1870).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Louis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Louis:

Homberg may be either Homberg (Efze) or Homberg (Ohm). For both, the Lutheran church records are available on Archion:

Today, Budde families still live in Homberg (Efze), so that's where I'd start. That's the Homberg that's further from his wife's birth place (about 50 km rather than 30 km).

Also, this is a probable relative: https://www.online-ofb.de/famreport.php?ofb=wabern&ID=I5888&nachname=Budde

When you're looking for his entry in the German church records, please note that "Homberg" in the database of emigrants could mean either the town itself, or any of the small villages that surround it. If no birth entry can be located in the church records of Homberg (Efze), the records of the villages belonging to that town have to be checked as well. Judging from today's distribution of the name, Homberg (Efze)-Mühlhausen https://www.archion.de/de/browse/?no_cache=1&path=177273-303245-303944 is the next best option (compare https://grabsteine.genealogy.net/tomb.php?cem=5820&tomb=159).

If the presumed birth date (7 Dec 1829) is from a tombstone or obituary then it can not be assumed to be correct. Check for entries within +/- 1 year of that.

Looking at the entries in Lagis, it seems to me that this is a duplicate entry for the same person. Duplicate because the entry is filed in two different agencies. One in the government, one in the interior ministry. (As if the interior ministry is not a part of the government...)

Yes, duplicate entries are very common in this database.

As for which Homberg the entry refers to, see my comment above.
