Biography

He was born about 1590 in England,

Thomas Bunn married Bridgitt (of unknown maiden surname).

He was a surgeon and physician. He was outfitted by the Virginia Company of London, England and sent to Virginia in 1620.

He filed claims for payment against two patients who did not pay for his services in 1621 and 1622.

He lived in a household on the Governor's Land near Jamestown, Virginia and testified at an inquest into the 1624 death of a servant named Elizabeth Abbott. Numerous accounts document the settlers' demands for Bunn's medical skills.

In 1626 he successfully sued an indentured servant who was compelled to serve an additional month. The same servant later apologized for making false accusations.

Two physicians were in the Jamestown, Virginia around 1620-26. Thomas Bunn and Thomas Bohunr. Initially, these two individuals appeared to be one and the same. However, after thoroughly researching the records from that period, information found therein indicates that they were different individuals. Documentation to that effect follows.

Both arrived on the ship Abigail. Information on page 57 of the book The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1660, by Peter Coldham, pertaining to those living at Pasbehay & the Maine, near Jamestown, on 30 Jan 1625, indicates that Thomas Bunn and family were among the residents, and that they came to Virginia on the ship Abigail. Information on page 239 of the Records of the Virginia Company of London, 1606-26, reads “The Abigail of 350 Tunnes, sent in February 1620, with 230 persons.” The next page states that Dr. Bohun was sent as a physician to the Colony. Although Dr. Bunn’s name was not mentioned, it appears that both physicians may arrived on the same ship - at the same time. An item on page 157, of Virginia Company of London, 1619-22, dated November 1620, indicated that the company wanted to send the ship Abigail back to England in the Spring of 1621 to pick up, and transport, 200 persons from the Isle of Wight.

Another item on page 257 of Book Part A, Virginia Company of London, 1620-22, dated July 16, 1621, mentions the untimely death of Doctor Bohunr. He was slain in a fight with 2 Spanish ship of war on March 19, 1920. An item on page 25, Adventure of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1625, edited by Martha Woodroof Hiden, lists Thomas Bunn and family in the Muster of the Governor’s Men at Pasbehaighs on January 30 1624. That documentation proves that Dr. Bunn was alive after the death of Dr. Bohunr and that they were not one and the same.

According to an article in The Virginia Company of London dated October 30, 1621, the wife of Dr. Bohunr was named Allice.

Dr. Bunn died sometimes prior to January 28, 1627. An article on page 160, Minutes of the Council & General Court of Colonial Virginia, by H. R. McIlwaine, reads as follows: “Thomas Ironmonger arrested at the suite of Bridget Bunn, WIDOW, for 215 pounds of tobacco or to appeare 12th of February.”
