James immigrated to the United States in about 1858 when he was 25. He travelled in a wagon from Ft. Des Moines Iowa to Salt Lake City, Utah Territory with the John W. Berry Company in 1858.[3]
James married Harriet Dye on May 15, 1859 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah Territory.[4] They had twelve children.[5]
James was a Mormon polygamist and married a number of other women., but there are no records that he had children with them. He lived in Salt Lake City, Kanab, and later in St. George.
He married Esther Mayers on February 21, 1896 in St. George, Washington County, Utah.[8][9][10]
James passed away at an age of ninety-one on November 20, 1923 in Provo, Utah County, Utah. He is buried in the Kanab City Cemetery.[11][12][13][14]
