Biography

Elijah was born on 23 December 1802 in Surry Co., North Carolina, USA. He was the son of James Phillip Burch and Sarah (Gillespie) Burch.^[1][2][3][4]

When Elijah was 18 he married Merreta (Marrieta) Griffin on 17 May 1821 in Montgomery, Kentucky, USA. .^[5][6]

When Elijah was 30 he married Phoebe May on 29 May 1833 in Greene Co., Indiana, USA.^{[7][8][9][10]}

When Elijah was 34 he married Catherine McHaley on 17 September 1837 in Greene Co., Indiana, USA. Other source shows 29 Aug 1837.^[11][12][13]

In the 1840 census Elijah (age 37) was living in Polk, Missouri, USA.^[14]

When Elijah was 44 he married Mary Mullenex on 24 June 1847 in Greene, Missouri, USA. .^[15]

Genforum message from S Jones dated 11-16-2005 (copied via database of M Marchant, 13 Aug 2007) Elijah Burch was a farmer/rancher. He was born in either Surry Co., NC, or Stokes Co., NC, on Dec 23, 1802, and named after his uncle Elijah Gillispie. He moved from North Carolina to Greene Co., IN, as a young man; then to Polk Co., MO, in 1840; Laclede Co., MO, in 1850; they may have gone down the Mississippi River in order to migrate to Texas, because daughter Amanda Jane later remembered enduring a terrible storm in Galveston, TX. Elijah Burch moved to McClennan Co., TX, in 1853; and then to Bosque Co., TX, in 1855, where his property, 640 acres purchased for 0 from J. S. Wills, bordered on the line with McClennan Co. in the north. He later got a land patent on 160 acres on Rocky Creek, a Brazos River tributary about 12.5 miles SE from Meridian. Then he purchased 600 acres for .76 from J.B. Standefer, followed by a final purchase of 640 acres for 90 from N.G. Worrell and G.W. Steen. His first wife was Phoebe May, whom he married in Greene Co., IN. She died and he remarried, to Catharine McHaley, also in Greene Co., IN. His third and last wife was Mrs. Mary Smith, whom he is said to have married in Green Co., MO. She was said to be about 22 years younger than her husband, and already had three sons. Elijah's daughter Amanda Jane said that her stepmother Mary was abusive. She also reported that Mary forced her youngest son Elias Smith to murder Elijah Burch!!!. He was on his hands and knees getting a drink from a stream when the boy hit him in the head with an ax, sometime between May 20 and October, 1863. The boy reportedly confessed to the murder years later, but was apparently never charged. The motive was Mary Smith Burch wanted to gain possession of her husband's extensive land holdings and other property. Three years later she married a James Sikes in Bosque Co.

James was married twice. He had a son Barnabas by his first wife and had 9 more children by his 2nd wife. I assume his first wife died, probably in childbirth. His first child by his second wife was Elijah who is my gg grandfather. Barnabas was one of 44 men hanged in Gainesville, TX in October 1862 as Union sympathizers. There is a long story about this. Elijah was murdered a few months later by a step son. Morbid - but a part of my family history. Barnabas and Elijah and some of their children moved to Texas during the early 1850s.
