Biography

Mary was a Friend (Quaker)

Mary Burcham was born on 13 March 1760 in Virginia or Surry County, North Carolina, a daughter of John Burcham and Roseanna Swearingen.[1]

She married John Hiatt on 1 Oct 1783 in Tom's Creek, Surry County, North Carolina.[2]

John and Mary were granted a certificate from the Mt. Pleasant MM (Grayson Co., VA) to the Fairfield MM, (OH) on 26 Aug. 1809. They were also noted in the New Garden MM of Guilford County, NC earlier.[3] Per Jerry Gentry, many of her descendants now live in Texas.

Mary and John Hiatt had the following children[4]

  1. Joseph Hiatt was born on 10 Jun 1784 in Surry County, North Carolina.
  2. William Hiatt was born on 17 Mar 1786 in Surry County, North Carolina.
  3. Elihu Hiatt was born c. 1788 in Surry County, North Carolina.
  4. John Hiatt was born 7 Apr 1791 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  5. Gideon Hiatt was born about 1793 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  6. Rueben Hiatt was born about 1796 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  7. Roseanna Hiatt was born 21 Jul 1798 in Grayson County, Grayson, Virginia.
  8. Jesse Hiatt was born on 12 Mar 1801 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  9. Anne Hiatt was born 16 Mar 1803 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  10. Rachel Hiatt was born on 21 Jan 1805 in Grayson County, Virginia.
  11. Mary Hiatt was born in 1807 in Grayson County, Virginia.

In 1850, widowed and 87 years old, Mary was living with her son, William, and his family at Stony Creek. Henry County, Indiana.[5]

She died on 17 November 1855 at the home of her son, John Hiatt, in Henry County, Indiana.[4] She was noted as 95 years, 8 months, and 4 days old.[1] She was buried in Nettle Creek Friends Cemetery in Dalton, Wayne County, Indiana. [6]
