Biography

Father Sir Hugh Burnell, 2nd Lord Burnell, Governor of Bridgnorth, Cefnllys, Dolforwyn, & Montgomery Castles[1] b. c 1347, d. 27 Nov 1420. It is unclear which of Sir Hugh's wives was his mother, but it appears not to have been Joyce Botetourt, whose IPM indicates she had no children.

On the other hand, we are told that the arms of Sir John Hungerford of Down Ampney who married Margaret Blount were: Quarterly:— 1. Sa., two bars ar., in chief three plates, with mullet for difference, HUNGERFORD 2. Ar., a lion ramp. sa. crowned or, within a bordure azure, BURNEL 3. Or, a slatier engrailed sa., BOTETOURT. 4. As the first. Impaling, ar., two bars az., over all an Escarbuncle of eight rays or, BLUNT OF MANGOTSFIELD; with the explanation that they are "The arms of Sir JOHN HUNGERFORD of Down Ampney, who married Margaret, daughter of Edward Blunt, of Mangotsfield, co. Glouc., by Margaret, daughter of Sir John Seymour. Sir John Hungerford, who died 1524, was the son of Sir Thomas, son of Sir Edmund by Margaret, daughter of Edmund Burnel, grandson of Hugh Lord Burnel by Joyce, daughter and heir of Sir John Botetourt.” [2] Given that Edward's eldest daughter was said to be 20 years old at the time of his 1416 i.p.m.(therefore born circa 1396), Edward could not have been the son of his father's second wife, as that marriage could not have taken place before 1407. This suggests he was the son of Philippa de la Pole, Hugh's first wife.

Sir Edward Burnell was born circa 1371 at of Billingford, East Riston, & Thurning, Norfolk, England.[3]

He married Alianore le Strange, daughter of Sir John le Strange, 6th Lord Strange of Knockin and Maud Mohun, before 1396; They had 3 daughters (Joyce, wife of Sir Thomas, 5th Lord Erdington; Katherine, wife of John Talbot, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury, and of Sir John Radcliffe; and Margery, wife of Sir Edmund Hungerford).[4]

A settlement for the marriage Sir Edward Burnell and Elizabeth de la Pole was made on 18 June 1415; No issue.[5]

Sir Edward Burnell died on 23 September 1415 at the Siege of Harfleur, Harfleur, Seine-Maritime, Upper Normandy, France; Died of the flux.[6]

If he died at the Siege of Harfleur he did not die at Agincourt. They are several hundred km apart
