During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company H of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[1] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 34 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 26 April 1863 from Bowling Green, Missouri. He died of disease on 25 October 1863 at the military hospital on Morris Island in South Carolina.[2]
