Biography

Notables Project
Raymond Burr is Notable.
Raymond Burr is/was a significant British Columbian.

Raymond William Stacy Burr was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, to William Johnston Burr (1889–1985), a hardware salesman, and his wife, Minerva Annette (née Smith, 1892–1974), a concert pianist and music teacher. His mother was born in Chicago, Illinois; Burr's ancestry included Irish, English, Scottish, and German.

At the time of the 1921 Canada Census, William Johnston, Minerva Annette, William Raymond Stacey (mistranscribed as "Henry"), and Mary Geraldine Burr were listed as living at 716 Queens Avenue, New Westminster, British Columbia, along with Minerva's mother, Ann Matilda Smith.[1]

Burr married actress Isabella ("Bella") Ward on January 10, 1948.[2] They lived together for less than a year, and divorced after four years. Neither remarried.

Raymond is most famous for his role as Perry Mason. He first auditioned in April 1956, and was told that he was at least 60 pounds overweight, so he went on a crash diet, and re-auditioned. His casting was announced in August, 1956, and the show ran from September 1957 to May 1966.

Raymond was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960.[3] In 1961, he won an Emmy for his title role on Perry Mason.[4]

He also starred as Robert T. Ironside in the eponymous show, which ran from 1967 to 1975.

Burr threw several "goodbye parties" before his death on September 12, 1993,[5][6] at his Sonoma County ranch near Healdsburg.
