Biography

Birth

Florence R. "Flora" Burroughs was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, probably on 23 Nov 1853. She was the daughter of Samuel Burroughs Jr. and Sarah Holland (Ellis) Burroughs,^[1] with whom she was living at Alstead in 1860, with her age recorded as 8.^[2] See the Research Note belowfor a discussion of her birth date.

Marriage

Flora R. Burroughs, 19, of Alstead, New Hampshire, married Elmer W. Powers, 23, sawyer, of Walpole, New Hampshire, at Alstead on 27 Nov 1872.^[3]

Death

Florence R. (Burroughs) Powers died from a cerebral hemorrhage at Boston, Massachusetts, on 10 May 1926, with her age recorded as 70.^[4] Her gravestone at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashua, New Hampshire, is inscribed with the dates 1855-1926.^[5]

Research Note

There is conflicting evidence on the birth date of Florence "Flora" (Burroughs) Powers. The 1963 history of Walpole, New Hampshire, says that she was born on 23 Feb 1853.^[6] The 1860 Census says she was 8 years old in June of that year.^[7] Her gravestone says that she was born in 1855,^[5] and her death record says that she was 70 years old when she died in May 1926.^[4] Her marriage record says she was 19 when she married in May 1872.^[3] An unnamed child (with no gender recorded) of Samuel Burroughs, of which there is no further record, was born at Alstead on 9 Feb 1851.^[8] The weight of the evidence—the Walpole history and her marriage record—appears to support the 1853 birth date.
