Matilda Burton was born enslaved near Shelbyville, Kentucky, to Isaac Burton and Eliza Porter Burton, in 1845. Her slave owner, Shelbyville landowner David Glass, hired her out as a domestic servant until emancipation in 1865. She married Joshua Dunbar on December 24, 1871. She passed away in 1934.
