Biography

Agnes (Butcher) Smith was born in Lancashire, England.

Agnes was born in on November 12, 1839, in Ulverston, Lancashire, England, in 1839.^[1] She was the daughter of John Butcher and Jane Riley. She was baptized on January 12, 1840, in Ulverston, at St Mary.^[2] She was enumerated in the 1841 ^[3] and 1851 census ^[4] residing with her family in Ulverston. In a851, at thirteen, she stated her occupation as "Throstle Peicer Woolen".

Agnes married Joseph Smith ^[5] on May 21, 1857, in Preston, Lancashire, at St John.^[6] It appears the couple had at least six children, John, about 1858, and Mary A. about 1860, were enumerated with their parents in the 1861 census ^[7] residing in Preston. In 1881, the family was enumerated living in Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire.^[8] Daughter Mary does not appear on census, but another son, William, born about 1864 does. In 1891, ^[9] the family is residing in the parish of Dilworth in Preston. Three more children, Thomas, Annie, and George, are at residence as well as one grandchild, Annie Hayhurst. Agnes remained in Dilworth. She is enumerated with her family in the 1901 ^[10] and 1911 census ^[11] living there.

Agnes passed away in 1920.^[12] Her death was registered in the second quarter in Preston. She was eighty.
