Biography

Birth

James `oge' Butler was the son of James Butler and Mary Butler (née Butler).

His year of birth has apparently been inferred from his age at death (78 in either 1726 or 1727) and could be 1647, 1648 or 1649. Different sources specify 1648/49[1] and 1649.[2]

Children

It seems to be generally agreed that James `oge' had five children:

  1. James d. 17 Oct 1746
  2. Mary
  3. Elizabeth d. 1727
  4. Theobald d. 1752
  5. Peter, or Pierce 'na Buile' d. c 1788

Marriages

Toby Butler argues that these five children were the result of three different marriages:[3]

  • James the son of Helena née Butler;
  • Mary and Elizabeth the daughters of Catherine Daly; and
  • Theobald and Peter the sons of Catherine Kirwan.

Others[4] list all five children as children of James Butler and Catherine Kirwan, daughter of Peter Kirwan.

Life

James lived at Doon, County Clare, Ireland. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He gained the rank of Captain between 1689 and 1691 in the Colonel Nicholas Purcell's Horse in King James II's Army in Ireland. [5]

On 13 February 1689 he was attainted. In 1691 having joined the 'Peace Party,' his life was spared although he did not recover his estates. He lived at Doone, County Clare, Ireland

Death

James is reported to have died aged 78 on 11 October in either 1726[6] or 1727[7].
