Joseph Butler was born on 23 Jan 1840^[1] in Pitt Town, New South Wales, Australia as the third child of James Butler and Mary O'Donnell. He had four siblings, namely: Thomas, Ann, John, and Mary Ann. He died on 02 Aug 1904^[2] in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia. When he was 24, he married Harriet Hawkins, daughter of John Hawkins and Harriet Skinner, on 20 Jun 1864^[3] in Wollombi, New South Wales, Australia.
