I am the granddaughter of Arminta Pounds Norris. My mother, Frances, and her 9 siblings were told that their mother was indian. Mom said her mother, Arminta, told her she was Shawnee and was born in Mason, WV. My mom told very interesting stories about her childhood while I was growing up. She had a peace pipe that belonged to her great-great-grandfather, Chief Blackhoff. One of my sisters unfortunately returned it to a tribe, out west, so it's no longer in the family.

Florence, one my mom's sisters, remembers Arletta, Arminta's older sister, taking her and a brother to WV in a horse and buggy a couple of days after grandma Arminta died. She recalls a lot of people being there and was in awe of the drum ceremony, dancing and so many men with long black hair. She didn't ask questions because "you just didn't talk about those things back then."

Mom's brother, Fay, stated his mom was pure blood Indian. My mother, Frances, told me that her mother had long, black hair that touched her knees and she wore them in 2 braids. Mom remembers Methodist missionaries coming to the "old brick" and converted her mother, Arminta, to christianity.

I have had 3 DNA tests done and am waiting on their results.

I have many stories that my mom told me that are quite interesting. After Arminta died, they were quite poor. So "Poppy", her dad Samuel Norris, would go every Friday night to get food donations from the owner of a diner. He was told to go to the back door after dark as he didn't "want anybody to know he was feeding those Indian kids."

Through this site and my DNA testing, I am hoping to find my mom's heritage and ancestor's.

If you have ANY information, stories or know the names of Arminta's and Arletta's real parents and what happened when they were very young, please email any information to me so our family can find their ancestors on my mother's side. Thank you, Lori
