Biography

Francis Mitchell Caird 1853-1926 - Francis Caird was born in Edinburgh and educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh and at the University of Edinburgh. As an undergraduate, he served as a dresser in Lord Lister's wards and subsequently practiced and promoted the Listerian techniques of antisepsis before moving on to techniques of aseptic surgery. This, as well as his regular visits to continental surgical centres allowed him to establish his reputation as a gastrointestinal surgeon. He was appointed to the Regius Chair in 1908. He was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1912 and went on to receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Edinburgh in 1920 following his retirement.
