Biography

Ferrell was born in Alabama in 1940 to Otha Calhoun and wife, Gracie. In 1940, the family was living in Hale County, Alabama.[1]

Ferrell passed away in 2013. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hale County, Alabama.

Ferrell Mayfield Calhoun, 77, passed away on Monday, March 4 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Col. Stanley Bamberg and the Rev. Charles Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otho E. and Gracie Calhoun; a brother, Leon Calhoun; and sisters, Marie Gibbs and Mary Creel. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Christine Barnette Calhoun; two daughters, Penny Gibson and husband, Jack of Northport and Layne Calhoun of Marion; granddaughter Sara Grace Gibson of Northport; sister-in-law, Ruby Calhoun of Centreville; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Brett Harrison, Billy Joe Hoggle, Doug Hoggle, Keith Hoggle, Dave Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Wallace Mitchell, Allen Thomas and Brent Marley. Honorary pallbearers are Viva Dean and Ellis Faught Wayne and Becky Barnette, Nicky and Jinnie Calhoun, Judy and John Deas, Sibyle and Darrell Cook and Dina and Jerry Pow. Alabama Department of Transportation employees, Brush Creek Hunting Club members. Mount Herman Charge and Pleasant Valley Church members, Black Warrior EMC employees, nurses and staff of Noland Hospital of Tuscaloosa, Hunter Creek Health/Rehab and Hospice of West Alabama. Ferrell was employed with the Alabama Department of Transportation for 43 years. He formed many lifelong friendships during those years. Ferrell and Christine owned and operated North Perry Grocery for 12 years. He was active in his community through the Perry County Water Board, member of the Masonic Friendship Lodge #183, Shriners, Sheriff’s Reserve, National Guard and Army Reserves. For many years, he was a member and served on the administrative council for the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church and Mount Hermon Charge. He enjoyed gardening and beach trips with his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Buiding Fund, 814 Ironville Road, Marion, AL 36756 or the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund 1605 Wateroak Road, Greensboro, AL 36744.
