Blunston License
The first record of Gilbert is when he purchased a Blunston License (land warrant) on 7 Apr 1734 for 400 acres. The land was located on the south side of Conodoguinet Creek, a tributary west of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster (now Cumberland) County, Pennsylvania. Note: it is not known if Gilbert ever lived on this land. Also, a Charles Campbell and James Campbell each got 200 acres on the same day. A William Campbell got 100 acres on 13 Apr 1737. It is not known if these Campbells are any relation to Gilbert.

Baptism of Charles
The first mention of Gilbert in Virginia is the baptism of his son Charles. On 15 Oct 1741 in Gilbert Campbell’s home on the North Branch of the James River, Gilbert’s son Charles was baptized by Rev John Craig. Also baptized on this day in the home of Gilbert were Margaret and Samuel Woods (not twins) children of Richard Woods; John and William Hall children of William Hall; James Young child of Robert Young; Jean Lapsley child of Joseph Lapsley; Agnes Woods child of William Woods [1]

Borden Tract
The purchase of the home where Gilbert’s son Charles was baptized was recorded almost a year later, the 26th of Aug 1742. Gilbert purchased 389 acres “on waters of James River” on the Borden Tract, which is located in present day Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Orange County Deed Book 8, pgs. 184-189 26-27 July 1742. Benjamin Borden of the County of Orange to Gilbert Campbell of same. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Gilbert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Gilbert:

Unfortunately for descendants of this Gilbert, a fellow descendant has done a BigY test at the Campbell Project at FTDNA. The result showed that his Y-DNA does not match what has been determined to be "Auchinbreck" Y-DNA. If he is connected to Auchinbreck, it is not by direct lineage. He actually is lining up more with what is believed to be the old Campbells of Loudoun (the Sheriffs, not the Earls). That is the picture to date. I invite all direct male descendants to conside testing with the Campbell Project to help resolve the mystery.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this valuable comment. I am not a descendant of this line, I am from the Campbell families of Amherst Co VA (next door to Augusta).

Let's hope that we can all work together to disconnect, and re-connect this man to the correct line of ancestry. Best regards, Lilly Martin

Hi Lilly, yes that would be great.... And he didn't match any Campbell Kids either so we don't need to look there for a connection. He is actually upstream from Roberta Estes' Claiborne Co., TN bunch... The Project has been focusing on Rockbridge Co, VA to find out what other lines there match him, and to our surpise, well mine anyway, there are 4-6 different Campbell families (still waiting on a couple tests at this time) that are all unrelated that passed through there at one point or another!

Yes, R-FT357997 is downstream from (old) Loudoun. Hmm...

Campbell-5789 and Campbell-2760 appear to represent the same person because: Same person based on wife. Wife's maiden name of Osran, not Osman, is based on probate records of Gilbert Campbell.
