Ambrose Campbell died about 1811-1812 in Nelson County, Virginia. His will was written 7 Dec 1811, and was proven almost a year later on 28 Sep 1812.^[1]

Transcribed Will

I, Ambrose Cambell of the County of Nelson do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following (viz) First; my will and desire is that all my just debts shall be paid. Secondly; I leave to my wife, Margaret, all of my stock of every kind, my household and kitchen furniture, and plantation, utensils, also she is to live on my land and to cultivate the same as she may think proper during her natural life. Thirdly; After the death of my wife, I give and bequeath to my son Peter Campbell, one hundred acres of my land wherein I now live to be laid off, where he now lives, together with having the benefit of one half of my orchard on the part I now live on, to him and his heirs forever. Fourthly; I give and bequeath to my Daughter Lucy Campbell seventy four and three fourth acres land being part of the land I now live on, and the part where I live (is one half the orchard given my son Peter) and one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Fifthly; After the death of my wife, my will and desire is that all the property which I have lent her (not land heretofore given) shall be equally divided between my following children: Rachel Innis, Frances Innis), Sally Mills, Tandy Campbell, Elizabeth Mays, and my daughter Polly Pages children, (my daughter Polly Pages children having only one sixth part to be divided between them) to them and their heirs forever. Sixthly and Lastly; I hereby nominate and appoint my son Peter Campbell and William H. Digges Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and testaments. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 7th day of December 1811.

At a court held for Nelson County this 28th day of September 1812 This last Will and Testament of Ambrose Campbell desc'd was proved in Court by Joseph White and John Settles two witness thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Peter Campbell one of the Executors in said will mentioned who made oath and were qualified according to Law, and together with James Edmunds his security entered into and acknowledged this bond in the penalty of Two thousands dollars current money conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form of Law. Teste Spotswood Garland Clk

Know all men by these presents that we Peter Campbell and James Edmunds are held and firmly bound unto Joseph Shelton, John Dillard, Jesse Jopling and Jo's C. Cabell- Gentlemen Justices of the Court of Nelson Co. now siting in the sum of two thousand dollars to the payments whereof well and truly to be made to the said Justices, and their successors, we bind ourselves, and each of us, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, this 28th day of September in the year of our Lord 1812 and in the 37th year of the Commonwealth. The condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bound Peter Campbell one of the Executors of the last will and testament of Ambrose Campbell deceased do make or cause to be made a true and perfect Inventory of all, and singular these goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession or knowledge of him the said Peter Campbell or in the hands and possession of any other person or persons for him and the same as made to exhibit or cause to be exhibited, into the County Court of Nelson at such time as he shall be thereunto required by the said Court, and the same goods, chattels and credits, and all other the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, which at anytime after shall come to the hands, possessions or knowledge of the said Peter Campbell or into the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him do well and truly administer according to Law. And further, do make a just and true account of his acting and doings therein, when required by the said Court, and also shall well and truly pay and deliver all the legacies contained and specified in the said Testaments, as far as the said goods, obligation to be void and of no effects or else to remain in full force and virtue.
