Biography

Robert McManus is given as the son of Lt. Hugh McManus of SC by Robin Vail Hough in 1994. No sources for the names or dates were given and she has not been located since.

Robert McManus md Polly Cane on June 15 1810. [1] There is no Robert McManus as head of household listed in 1810 Lancaster Co SC and he is of the age to have moved on to GA and married there. He is not found in any GA census or Land Lottery record, however.

Census shows Leroy P. McManus was born in 1806 SC and evidence suggests he is the son of Mary McManus of Talbot Co., GA, shown in later censuses as being born c1782 SC. All records of Leroy, his mother and siblings are of Talbot Co., GA on the extreme west edge of Georgia. Richmond County is on the extreme East edge adj SC. It is known that early SC descendants of Capt. James McManus line moved to Richmond Co., GA at the turn of the century. It is possible that, after the death of Robert, Mary "Polly" and her children moved further west.

Age categories and relationship to Leroy and his siblings place her as the same woman as Mary McManus in the guardiaship document and probably Leory's mother in 1830, 1840 and 1850.

In 1830 she had numerous young people in the household, poss. children or other relationships.[2] prob. with Leroy McManus as female 40-50.

The 1832 Talbot Co., GA Guardianship document names her children and her deceased spouse.

The next census she is Mary McManus [4] 50-60 years near son, Jackson.
