Biography

Watson Cannady, son of William Cannady and Rebecca Watson, was born between 1801 and 1810 in Kentucky or Harrison County, Indiana. [1][2]

Some family trees report his birth as about 1808 in Nelson County, Kentucky, however, there is no documentation. Based on his father's land records, he could have been born in Kentucky or Harrison County, Indiana, during the 1801-1810 time period. [1]

Move from Kentucky to Indiana
Watson's parents were on the August 1800 tax list in Lincoln County, Kentucky. They disposed of their property in October 1801. "Since no further record of William Cannady Sr. occurs in Nelson County, we must assume he may have moved to another county."[1]

Research for Watson's elder brother William Jr, born February 1800 in Nelson, Kentucky, says "While still a youth, his parents migrated north across the Ohio River into the southern part of Harrison County, Indiana." [2]

The next record for William Cannady Sr is his daughter Mary's marriage to James Watson in Harrison County 22 March 1810. [1] William Sr is on the 1820 census in Harrison County and Watson might be one of the two males, age 10 to 15, in his household.[3]

Move from Indiana to Illinois
In 1828, William and his son, William Jr. acquired land in Blount township, about 5 miles NW of Danville, Vermilion, Illinois. [4]It is assumed that Watson went to Illinois with them.

Cannady-Canaday Family Research
There were two unrelated families in Vermilion County, Illinois, with similar names: Cannady and Canaday. The members of the Cannady family who settled north of Danville came from Kentucky and Indiana and were either Methodists or belonged to the Church of Christ. The Canaday families from North Carolina and Tennessee settled in the southern part of Vermilion county and were generally Quakers.[4][5]

1831 Marriage
Asenath (aka Asenith) Blunt and Watson Cannady married 25 December 1831 in Vermilion County, Illinois.[6][7]

It took place primarily in Illinois state and Michigan Territory (now Wisconsin). This was a conflict between the Sauk and Fox Indians led by Black Hawk, and U.S. troops. The conflict was over ownership of land in eastern Illinois. The major battle of the war was fought at the mouth of the Bad Axe River in Southern Wisconsin. Watson's widow, Asenith (Blunt) Cannady, married Henry Ferguson 11 June 1837 at Vermilion, Illinois.[6]

This land transaction is dated after Watson's death--part of his estate? [14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Watson by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Watson:
