Alphonse was born 11 November 1220 to Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castille. He was the second son of the couple to receive the name Alphonse, the name of his maternal grandfather (Alfonso VIII of Castille), not previously used by the Capetian dynasty. The elder son of that name was a twin born in 1213 who died in infancy.
After a first annulled marriage arranged with Isabelle de la Marche in 1227 by the Treaty of Vendome, he was instead destined in 1229 by the Treaty of Paris to be the husband of Jeanne de Toulouse the heiress of her father Raymond VII's estates.
At the age of 20 he was knighted by his brother Louis IX on 24 June 1241 (St-Jean-Baptiste day), and invested as count of Poitiers, which had been accorded him by their father's testament.
