Biography

Francois Carlin has Italian Roots.

Francois Carlin was born about 3 Jul 1740 in Rosolina, Rovigo, Veneto, Italy, son of Joseph Vincent Carlini Sr (~1712 - ) and his first wife Charlotte (Kerrignon) Carlini (~1716 - ~1740).

Francois Carlin married Marie Anne Sauvagin, widow of Jacques Bourgeois, on 24 May 1776, St. Charles, Louisiana, New Spain.[1] Their daughter was:

His name did not appear in the index of the First Families of Louisiana by Conrad, although his brother Joseph and a Dominique Carlin appeared in the General Roll of Louisiana Troops 1720-1770[3] Dominique may be another brother.

A household of 4 white Carlins were on the right bank of the river in the St. John the Baptist Parish and listed between Andre Himel and Masson in the 1770 census of the German Coast.[4] They produced 10 quarts of rice and 30 quarts of corn. This could be Francois, or Joseph, or perhaps both.

Francois was deceased by August 14, 1780, when his widowed wife entered into a marriage contract.

Francois Senequier (Sinitiere), a shoemaker, native of Lagarde in the Generalite de la Provence, Diocese of Frejus, son of Louis Senequier and Elisabette Simianne, promises to marry Marianne Sauvagin, native of Bordeaux, widow of Francois Carlin, daughter of Pierre Sauvagin and Marie Agnes Leonard. Witnesses: Jean Millet, Ponce LaSeigne, Jacques Echetaire (Steiger) and Pierre Bossie. Marianne Sauvagin brings to the marriage a small farm of 2 arpents, bounded by the properties of Jean Jacques Haydel and Andre Portier. This property comes to her from her prior marriages to Jacques Bourgeois and Francois Carlin.[5]

Marriage contract before Robert Robin de LOgny between Francois SENEQUIR, shoemaker, legitimate and major son of Louis Senequier and Elisabette SIMIANNE, native of Lagarde in the generality of Provence, Bishopric of Frejus, and Marianne SAUVAGIN, widow of the late Francois CARLIN, legitimate daughter of Pierre Sauvagin and Marie Agnes LEONARD, native of Bordeaux, generality of Bordeaux. Witnessed by Ponce Laseigne, Jacques Echetaire, and Pierre Bossie, all friends in lieu of relatives. The bride brings into marriage 2 arpents of land on the left bank of the river ascending, bounded below by Jean Jacque Haidel and above by Endre Portier, which came from the estates of her first two husbands, Jacques BOURGEOIS and Francois CARLIN. [6]

Francois's brother's name, Joseph Carlin, appeared in the 25 Jun 1766 census of Villere's Company, yet the entry included only 1 woman, 1 musket, and 5 arpents unoccupied land.[7] It was listed between Joseph St. Cir and Antoine Blanquette.

By October 30, 1774, Joseph was living in Attakapas with his wife and 4 children 20 cattle, 2 horses and mules, and 10 pigs. Listed between Widow David and Niochelet and his wife.[8] Joseph's name was included on the list of Militiamen at the post of Attakapas in 1789.[9]

The 4 May 1777 census of Attakapas provided more detailed information on the family including all names and ages: Joseph Carlin, 36; Francoise L'Ange, 32; Sons: Denis, 11; Selestin, 9; Honore, 7; Alexis, 4; Eugene, 2. 70 cattle, 8 horses, 30 hogs.[10]
