Biography

Giovanni Carrabba is born 6 December 1852 and baptized the next day in Corleone. Giovanni is the son of Bernardo Carrabba and Giacinta Spinella.

In the 1871-78 matrimonial records for Corleone, on the same certificate with Giovanni Carrabba's record is that of his first wife, Lucia Crapa. Lucia is the daughter of Giuseppe Crapa and Pietra Ligotino. His godparents are Giovanni di Bella and Calogera Bartolotta, a married couple. [1]

Lucia and Giovanni marry on 14 October 1877 in Corleone.[2]

Giovanni and Lucia have at least three children: Giuseppe (1881), Antonino (1883), and Giacinta/Jennie (1887).

Giuseppe is born 17 January 1881 and baptized 19 January 1881 in Corleone. His godfather is Domenico Marretta, from Prizzi.[3]

Nicolo' Grizzaffi and Francesca Cascio stand as godparents to Antonino on 22 October 1883.[4]

In 1886, two of Giovanni's siblings, their spouses, and children, emigrate to the United States through the port of New Orleans.

Giacinta, known as Jennie after she emigrates to the United States, is born 15 August 1887 in Corleone, according to her profile on Find A Grave. She is the daughter of Giovanni Carrabba and his first wife, Lucia Crappa.[5]

Jennie is the wife of Corleonese immigrant Phillip Demma. She may be his second wife.

John remarries by 1893 to Rosie Bracco. They have at least eight children together: Bernardo (1893), Virginia (1896), Sam C. (1897), Nancy (1898), Janie (1901), Lucia (1902), Laura Lena (1904), and Carrie M. (1906).

In the 1910 federal census of Justice Precinct 4, Brazos, Texas, taken 23 April, Tony and his father, John Carrabba, are neighbors:

Tony Corrobo, 24 (b. 1886), and his wife of 4 years (m. 1906), Lena, 23 (b. 1887), were both born in Italy. Lena has had 3 children, 2 living. At home are Mary, 1 (b. 1908), and John, 11 months (b. May 1909), both born in Texas. Tony emigrated in 1892 and is a naturalized citizen. He is an employer with a farm. Lena is a farm laborer.

John Corrobo, 58 (b. 1852), and Rosa, 45 (b. 1865), his wife, were born in Italy and have been married for 16 years (m. 1894); it is the second marriage for them both. Rosa has had 9 children, 7 living. The oldest child at home, Jack, 18 (b. 1892), was also born in Italy. The younger children were born in Texas: Ben, 15 (b. 1895), Jennie, 13 (b. 1897), Sam, 11 (b. 1899), Nancy, 9 (b. 1901), Lucy, 6 (b. 1904), Laura, 5 (b. 1905), and Corina, 3 (b. 1907). John emigrated in 1892 and is a naturalized citizen. John is an employer with a farm. His six oldest children are listed as farm laborers.[6]

In the 1920 federal census of Justice Precinct 4, Brazos, TX, taken 26 January:

John Carrabba, 67 (b. 1853), and wife Rose, 53 (b. 1867), emigrated in 1889 and 1890 respectively. At home are children Sam, 21 (b. 1899), Louisa, 15 (b. 1905), and Carrie, 12 (b. 1908). John and Rose born in Italy, the children in Texas. John is a farmer working on a home farm on his own account. His two older children are farm laborers.[7]


Death of John

John Carrabba, born 19 March 1852 in Corleone, dies 28 August 1928 at age 76 in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. He is buried in Mt Calvary Cemetery under the name “John Carroba.” His FAG profile says he is the son of Bernardo Carrabba and Giacinta Spinella, and that his birth record gives his date of birth as 6 January 1852.[8] He is buried with his second wife, Rosie Brocco Carrabba.[9]

Jennie dies 4 April 1976 at age 88 in Houston, Texas. She is buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Houston.[10]
