Biography

1776 Project
Soldier John Carter served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

John Carter was born June 8, 1725 in Spotsylvania[1], the eldest son of Joseph and Catherine Carter. [2]. and was residing in Spotsylvania County, Virginia at the time of the American Revolutionary War. John served in the Virginia Militia, and also furnished a substitute for a portion of the War. [3] John is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor #A209451. DAR records indicate that John died after April 22, 1793, in Orange county, Virginia and that his wife's name was Susannah. Applications for membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution have been made by the descendants of their daughter Polly, who married David Lively. [4]

Revolutionary War pension application files were primarily created as a result of legislation enacted by Congress between 1818 and 1855 [5] Philip Carter called witnesses to testify that he had served on behalf of multiple persons during the war. On October 15, 1832, Joseph Carter appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Barren county, Kentucky to testify that Philip had served in the military as a substitute for his father, John Carter, and his brother-in-law, David Lively. [[Lively-223] [6]

John is named in his father's Will in 1750, and on January 4, 1771, his mother deeded him 215 acres, where his father had lived and died. On April 24, 1780, Joseph Rogers, of Culpeper, sold to "John Carter, gent." of Spotsylvania, an improved plantation of 188 acres in Orange County. February 25, 1785, John Carter, planter of Orange, purchased an improved plantation of 455 acres in that county, from Robert Thomas. (Note: Additional land transactions are found in the bio for John in the book by Joseph Lyon Miller, cited above) John died in Orange county, Virginia, after 1793. Note: Orange County was formed on 1 Jan. 1734/35 from the western part of Spotsylvania County.

Researchers Notes

Joseph Lyon Miller states in his book that In 1747, in Spotsylvania county, Virginia, John married Susannah Beverly Winslow, born 1729, a daughter of Benjamin Winslow and Susanna Beverley, who married November 22, 1726, in Spotsylvania county, Virginia. Susannah is named as Benjamin's Will the following year. A photocopy of the Will may be viewed here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9PX-2SJ3-T

Joseph Lyon Miller made an error in John Carter's paternity that was discovered by Bowman, Elby F. and presented in "The ancestors of Joseph Carter of Buckingham County, Virginia and Bath and Morgan Counties, Kentucky", which can be found here: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/41723-the-ancestors-of-joseph-carter-of-buckingham-county-virginia-and-bath-and-morgan-counties-kentucky

Joseph Lyon Miller was wrong about the paternity of John Carter because the will that he attributes to Joseph Carter, son of Thomas Carter, was the will of Joseph Carter son of William Carter and Mary Goodloe. This has been proven by research done by Bowman, Elby F. in "The ancestors of Joseph Carter of Buckingham County, Virginia and Bath and Morgan Counties, Kentucky", which can be found here: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/41723-the-ancestors-of-joseph-carter-of-buckingham-county-virginia-and-bath-and-morgan-counties-kentucky

More recent research by Paul Carter has backed this up. You can find a copy here. https://1drv.ms/b/s!Aq2n7OT79RQomHhRb9N-PTVXI3fo?e=2oESop
