Biography

Jonathan, aka "John" Carter was born between 1744 and 1749, in Colleton County, South Carolina. The Chinkypin I, II, III and Addendum (pages 286 - 302), published by the Echols County Historical Society, Inc., in Statenville, Echols, Georgia, United States, traces the pioneer ancestors of Echols County, which includes Jonathan as one of the pioneer children of Jacob Carter [1]

John is found on the First Census of the newly formed United States, published in 1790 from 1783 tax records. He is living in Surry county, North Carolina. [2] In 1800, John is living in Salisbury, Surry County, North Carolina. [3]

John Carter's estate was probated April 3, 1802, in Surry County, North Carolina. The administer was his wife, Lydia (maiden name not given) 34 pages of the estate records may be viewed on FamilySearch.org. [4]

After his death, his widow, Lydia (umn) Carter married Nicholas Hutchens on December 20, 1809, in Surry County, North Carolina. [5] Nicholas was the husband of Sarah Ladd, who died February 22, 1808, in Surry County, North Carolina, at the age of 64. Nicholas is found here on WikiTree: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hutchins-464

'Note: The only children's names mentioned in the papers of John Carter and Lydia are Sarah, Clement, John and Charles. Sarah married Willis Joyner (Willis died in Surry, NC). John Carter was appointed guardian to Sarah Joyner's son, Willis Joyner (Jr.). This Willis Joyner received $5 from John Carter, guardian, upon the age of 21.

If Lydia married Jonathan in 1775 she is most likely not the mother of the children born prior to 1775.
