Biography

Canada Flag
Maud (Carter) Bailey lived in Potton, Quebec, Canada.

Maud May Carter was born in 1884. In addition to the entry in the Carter Family Bible,[1] her birth date and parentage were also recorded on the occasion of her and her husband's adult baptisms on 30 Mar. 1920.[2] Her birth date is corroborated by the 1901 census referenced below. She was the daughter and oldest child of Melvina Bowen, born when Melvina was only 17. Maud's official father was James Carter though DNA evidence has demonstrated that Maud's biological father was Chauncey Magoon. It is thought by the family to be unlikely that Maud ever knew that she was not biologically a "Carter".

The discovery of Maud's biological father was based on an extensive DNA study involving at least 10 descendants of Maud and James Carter, and a number of Magoon descendants. The latter included a granddaughter and a great-grandson of Chauncey Magoon, who both showed DNA matches with Maud Carter descendants in keeping with the above conclusion. A detailed paper on this investigation will be made available.

Maud was recorded on the 1891 and 1901 Potton censuses with her parents.[3][4]

In 1902, the Waterloo Advertiser (4 July) reported "Miss Maud Carter is at work for Mr. Parker of South Troy".

Maud Carter married Edgar Orville Bailey in North Troy, Vermont, on Oct. 11, 1905[5]. They went on to have 5 children over the next 17 years, though the second child died in 1912 after only 3 weeks[6]. Children were as follows:

  1. Wilson Edgar, b. 27 March 1909 (Mansonville); d. 26 Jan. 1997 (unmarried)
  2. Cecil Carter, b. 17 June 1912 (Mansonville); d. 8 July 1912
  3. Linwood Levi, b. 6 June 1915 (Highwater); d. 25 April 2005
  4. Merton Earl, b. 4 May 1922 (Highwater); d. 12 Feb. 2013
  5. Berton Merrill, b. 4 May 1922 (Highwater); d. 10 Feb. 2007.

Before 1912, they lived in the town of Mansonville and operated a bakery there. The 1911 census shows the couple living in Mansonville village with their oldest son Wilson[7].

Late in 1912, Edgar and Maud purchased a house and moved to Highwater (the place in South Potton which had until 1908 been called "Mansonville Station").[8][9] This coincided with Edgar joining the staff of the Canadian Customs, located at the Highwater railway station. They lived there (their three youngest children were born in their Highwater house) until moving back to the family farm in about 1932. The 1921 census lists Edgar and his wife living in Highwater, with their two oldest children, with the twins only to arrive the following year[10].

Maud was taken to the Hospital in Newport, VT. on 8 July 1953, at 5 a.m. and she passed away one hour later, at the age of 68.[11][12] She was buried in Mansonville Protestant Cemetery on 10 July 1953.[13]
