During the Civil War, he served as a Sergeant in Company G of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 29 years old, married and working as a stonecutter when he enlisted on 11 April 1863 from Lenox, Massachusetts. He was wounded in action on 30 November 1864 at the Battle of Honey Hill. Discharged 29 May 1865.[1]
