John L. Carter was born 26 Oct 1852 in Roane County, Tennessee.

He was the son of Joseph Carter and Lockey Luttrell.
He married Margaret Matilda Langdon 09 August 1873 in Polk County, Missouri. He passed away 26 April 1884 in Cedar County, Missouri. He had recently returned from from the Civil War in Wright County and was shortly afterward taken sick with typhoid fever of which he died. He was interred in Barren Creek Cemetery, Fair Play, Polk County, Missouri.
