Joshua Cate was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire, on May 12, 1702.[1] He was the son of Edward Cate and Elizabeth (Tucker) Cate.[2] Joshua married Anna Frost of Newcastle on August 13, 1724 in Portsmouth.[3][4] From 1722 to 1738 he lived on Craffort's Lane in Portsmouth and likely attended the North Church, whose records are missing during that period.[5] At his father's death in 1733, he received part of his land at Country Road and Sagamore Creek Road and likely changed membership to the South Church where baptismal records for their children exist.[6] Joshua was elected constable of Portsmouth in 1737, a position which resulted in his being sued for debt. He was licensed as an innkeeper in 1748, and sold Portsmouth property in 1752 and 1758.[7] He last appeared in Portsmouth records in 1762, and a 1763 newspaper mentioned Joshua Cate's former home. He moved to Falmouth, Cumberland, Maine, where his son Samuel had lived for over a decade. He was admitted to Falmouth's First Church in 1769, and worked as a tailor. He last appears in Falmouth records in December 1770.[8] No date of death has been discovered.

Research Notes
The 2008 May's issue of "The Maine Genealogist" has an outstanding article on "Harrington / Falmouth's Samuel Cates b. abt. 1720". To sum up the article: There is very little evidence to support that Edward Cate and Jane Jose where the parents of Samuel Cates. There is much greater support however, though not conclusive, that Joshua Cate, son of Edward Cate and Elizabeth Tucker of Portsmouth, NH, and Anne Frost are Samuel's parents. I've read the article many times now and feel that the research was thorough and accurate. In my opinion the facts do seem to strongly support that Joshua Cate was Samuel's father.
