Biography

The 1850 census shows him in the household of his parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Cates. He was about 15 years old and the eldest of the eight children of Jacob and Elizabeth.

There is an 10 February 1858 record that shows he was married to Elizabeth Calhoun in Henry County, Missouri.

His wife seems to have died early, perhaps in 1864.

In the 1870 census Joshua is shown in White Oak Township, Henry County, Missouri, with wife Mary A. Cates, and four children.

Entries on various sites show that he had been married three times, to Elizabeth Calhoun, to Mary Ann Brown, and to Melvina Brown.
