Biography

Margaret Cave[1]

Origin

Margaret was born c. 1552 at Prestwold, Leicestershire, England, daughter of Roger Cave (d. July 26, 1586) and Margaret (or Mary) Cecil (d. March 19, 1552/3), sister of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, minister of Elizabeth I.[2]

Alternate guessed birth date 1569. Unclear what is the basis for either guessed birth date.

Common Confusion

Some confusion about Margaret Cave: Margaret is sometimes confused with her mother, Margaret Cecil, who is sometimes is said to be a daughter of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, and his 2nd wife, Mildred Cooke. Margaret Cecil was actually the sister of William Cecil, Lord Burghley.

Margaret married only once, to Sir William Skipwith of Coates (c.1564-May 3, 1610). She did not marry a 2nd time to Erasmus Smith. Others try to add a 2nd marriage for her mother, Margaret Cecil to Ambrose Smith. Both Margaret and her mother died before their husbands, so a second husband for either is unlikely.[3]

Marriage and Children

Margaret married to Sir William Skipwith.[4]

Children:[1]

  1. Henry Skipwith, Sir; m. Amy Kempe[5]

Death and Legacy

Margaret died on August 22, 1594 at Coates, Leicestershire, England.[4]

Cecil-834 and Cave-401 are not ready to be merged because: These two are more likely mother and daughter. Margaret Cecil and her daughter, Margaret Cave are often confused.

M. Cave married Skipwith and M. Cecil married Roger Cave. See Cave-401 bio for explanation.
