Charles was born after 1700[1] Charles was baptised on the 3rd of April 1704, at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, England.[2] He was the son of Rachel Russell and William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire.[1][3]
Charles was a the vice-president of the The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge. He was awarded the Copley Medal for his work in the development of thermometers. He was one of the early experimenters with the storage of electricity. His son Henry was a much greater scientist then his father.[4] He held the office of Gentlemen of the bedchamber to Frederick, Prince of Wales 1728-30.[1]
Charles was married on the 9th of January 1727, to the Lady Ann Grey, daughter of the Hon. Jemima Crew and Henry Grey, 1st and last Duke of Kent.[1][3] They were married at St James, Piccadilly, Westminster, Middlesex, England.[5]
Charles served three time as a member of Parliament. Firstly for Heytesbury between the 13th of Apr. 1725 - 1727.[1] Secondly for Westminster between 1727 - 1734.[1] And thirdly for Derbyshire between 1734 - 1741.[1]
Charles died at the age of 79, on the 28th of April 1783[1] He was buried on the 28th of April 1783, at Derby Cathedral.[6][7]
