Douglas Edward Cayley was born in Simla, India on 15 July 1870. He was baptised there on 17 August 1870.[1]
The 1881 census lists Douglas at Clifton, Gloucestershire, age 10, born Simla, India.[2]
He was educated at Clifton College and Sandhurst. In 1890 he joined the Worcester Regiment. He was awarded medals in the Second Boer War.
The 1911 census lists Douglas at Jhānsi, Uttar Pradesh, India, age 40, born Simla, India, Major in 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment.[3]
In the First World War he was present throughout the Gallipoli campaign; he was wounded three times; and in March 1918 he took command of the 29th Infantry Division. He retired in 1920 with the honorary rank of major-general. On 7 November 1906 he married Jessie Eyre Duff Gibson.
He died in Aldershot, Hampshire on 19 December 1951. He was buried at Woking, Surrey on 22 December 1951.[4] His death was registered at Aldershot, Hampshire in the 4th quarter of 1951.[5] Probate was granted on his estate on 8 March 1952, with his death date given as 22 December 1951.[6]
