1776 Project
Private William Cecil served with Virginia Line during the American Revolution.
In 1832, 83-year-old William gave sworn testimony as to his service as an "Indian Spy" during the Revolutionary War, pursuant to an application for a soldier's pension.[11] The testimony was transcribed and published in Annals of Tazewell County and stated he entered service of the United States "early in 1776 in the now County of Tazewell in the State of Virginia under Captain Thomas Mastin, Lt James Maxwell and ensign Thomas Witten, and that the said Company belonged to the regiment of the Virginia State line, commanded by Col. William Preston and Major Walter Crockett."[12][13][14] When Nancy tried to file for benefits the application was rejected stating (he) "Did not serve six months in any regularly organized corps."[15]

William passed away on December 11, 1836 and was survived by his widow Nancy.[16][1][2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

I think Nancy Ann Witten and Ann Witten are the same person, too. Edit to Add: Need to reach consensus on which death date will go in the merged profile: 10 Jun 1844 (Nancy) or 6 Sep 1843 (Ann).
