Mathurin Chabot

Mathurin est baptisé le 18 août 1637 à Saint-Hilaire de Nalliers, en Poitou (Vendée), fils de Jean Chabot et de Jeanne Rodé. Ses parrain et marraine sont Mathurin Derié et Tiphaine Esnard.[1][2][3][4]

La première présence de Mathurin trouvée dans la colonie est le 10 mai 1659 lorsqu'il est témoin d'une obligation entre Charles Legardeur de Tilly et Nicolas Juchereau devant Guillaume Audouart, il signe l'acte.[5] (Note: Marcel Trudel[6] et le Préfen[1] à sa suite ont mis la date du 10 mai 1658, aucun acte trouvé à cette date). Il serait donc arrivé au plus tard à l'automne 1658, les navires ne venant pas en hiver. On ne sait pas à quel titre il est venu, aucun contrat d'engagement n'a été relevé pour lui, donc probablement arrivé comme simple migrant.[2]

Mariage

Le 3 novembre 1661 devant le notaire Guillaume Audouart, un contrat de mariage fut fait entre Mathurin Chabot, fils de Jean Chabot et de Jeanne Rodé, et Marie Messange, fille de défunt Robert Mesange et de Madeleine Lehoux; parmi les personnes citées présentes du côté de Marie on trouve: Jacques Lehoux son grand-père, Jeanne Jahan, Jean Le Houx oncle, Robert Paré aussi oncle à cause de Françoise Le Houx, Marie Ollivier femme de Martin Prévost, et autres. Le douaire accordé par Mathurin à Marie est de 400 livres; les futurs conjoints se font donation mutuelle au dernier survivant. Le contrat est fait et passé à Beauport dans la maison de Jacques Lehoux. Mathurin signe, pas Marie ni sa famille, Marie Ollivier signe avec le notaire et les témoins.[7]

Marie Mésange épouse Mathurin Chabot, fils de Jean Chabot et de Jeanne Rodé, de la paroisse de Saint-Hilaire en Poitou, évêché de Luçon, le 17 novembre 1661 à Notre-Dame de Québec, en présence des témoins Guillaume Audouart dit St-Germain et Toussaint Touppin, le père Paul Ragueneau de la Société de Jésus officiant.[8][2]

Mathurin sera hospitalisé à l'Hôtel-Dieu de Québec en septembre 1695, y séjournant jusqu'en janvier 1696. Il y retourne le 8 mai 1696,[13] pour y rester jusqu'à sa mort le 12 juin 1696. Il est inhumé le même jour dans le cimetière de l'hôpital.[14]

Mathurin Chabot was baptised on 18 Aug 1637 in Saint-Hilaire of Nalliers, Poitou (Vendée), son of Jean Chabot and of Jeanne Rodé.[1][2][3][4]

The first presence of Mathurin found in the colony is on 10 May 1659 when he was witness to an obligation between Charles Legardeur de Tilly and Nicolas Juchereau before Guillaume Audouart, he signs the act.[5] (Note: Marcel Trudel[6] and Préfen[1] following him, have put this date as 10 May 1658, no act found with this date). He would thus have arrived at the latest in the fall of 1658, ships not coming in winter. It is unknown under what guise he arrived, no contract of hire has been found for him, so probably arrived as a simple migrant.[2]

He is the first Chabot of this line to emigrate to Canada.[2] There was another Chabot, Michel who migrated to the colony, but he came from a different area of France, no provable relationship.

Marriage

On 3 November 1661 before notary Guillaume Audouart, a marriage contract was done between Mathurin Chabot, son of Jean Chabot and of Jeanne Rodé, and Marie Messange, daughter of the late Robert Mesange and of Madeleine Lehoux; among those cited present on the part of Marie are found Jacques Lehoux her grandfather, Jeanne Jahan, Jean Le Houx uncle, Robert Paré also uncle because of Françoise Le Houx, Marie Ollivier wife of Martin Prévost, and others. The dower granted by Mathurin to Marie is of 400 livres; the future spouses made a mutual donation to the last survivor. The contract was done and executed in the house of Jacques Lehoux in Beauport. Mathurin signs, not Marie nor her family, Marie Ollivier signs with the notary and the witnesses.[7]

Marie Mésange married Mathurin Chabot, son of Jean Chabot and of Jeanne Rodé, of the parish of Saint-Hilaire in Poitou, diocese of Luçon, on 17 November 1661 in Notre-Dame de Québec, in the presence of witnesses Guillaume Audouart dit St-Germain and Toussaint Touppin, Father Paul Ragueneau of the Society of Jesus officiating.[8][2]

13 known children from the marriage, 8 of whom will marry, one will become a priest, 3 died young.[9][10] (listed above)

Death and Burial

Mathurin was hospitalised in Hôtel-Dieu of Québec in September 1695, remaining there until January 1696. He went back on 8 May 1696,[13] and remained there until his death on 12 June 1696. He was buried the same day in the hospital cemetery.[14][15]
