Biography

Thomas Chandler, tenth child of William and Mary (Dane) Chandler was born in Andover in 1676

He married Mary Stevens who died October 27 1751, daughter of Deacon Joseph Stevens of Andover. In the records is generally mentioned as Thomas Chandler Jr. (p. 759)

Thomas died in 1751. He is buried at South Church Cemetery, Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. Plot: Plot 412 Grid 16[4]

Inscription: Here Lies Buried ye Body of Mr Thomas Chandler of the second generation in Andover. Who Departed This Life November the 7 A.D. 1751 In ye 75 year of His Age. [4]

Property and Probate

On 5 March 1727/8, Thomas Chandler of Andover, in consideration of love he held for his eldest son William, deeded to William, cordwainer of Andover, his rights to land in what was known as Preston Plain that had been given to Thomas by his honored father William Chandler. On 19 April 1738, Thomas Chandler of Andover with wife Mary for 112 ounces of coined sterling silver alloy conveyed to his son James Chandler, clerk of Rowley, a tract of land in Methuen of about 100 acres about one and one-half miles north of the Merrimack River. On 7 April 1743, Thomas Chandler of Andover conveyed a piece of upland and meadow in Andover of about forty acres to his son Joseph Chandler, Jr., husbandman of Andover, for payment of £100 in bills of credit.[5]

In his will written 20 August 1748 (probate 2 December 1751), Thomas Chandler bequeathed to beloved wife Mary two cows to be at her disposal, the household stuff, and improvement of half the homestead during her natural life. Each of his five daughters receive £30 in bills of public credit old tenor and the household items remaining at the decease of their mother: Mary Ballard, Phebe Dane, Bridget Wood, Hannah Burroughs, and Elizabeth Dane. Grandchildren children of his late son William receive £100 to divide equally: Thomas Chandler, Rose Tenny, William Chandler, James Chandler, Stevens Chandler, and Mary Chandler when they arrive at age twenty-one (if currently in their minority), but Mary may receive hers earlier if she marries before. Joseph Chandler only child of his late son Joseph receives £30 at age twenty-one. The three fatherless children of daughter Hannah Burroughs each receives £10 at age twenty-one: George, Thomas, and John. The remainder of the estate goes to sons James and John who are also named executors. Real estate was £326.13.4 and total estate value was £423.7.0.[6]
