Biography

Urania was born in Vermont in 1811. She was the third child of Daniel Chappell and Clarissa Teall. As a teen-ager, she most likely lived for a short time across the border when her family moved to the area of Sutton, Lower Canada.

Urania (name spelled "Erana" in the marriage record) married David Wood (both "of Sutton, Lower Canada") in Richford, Vermont on 28 March 1828, Sterling Parker, JP[1]. Perhaps it was a double wedding, since her sister Angeline married Silas Wood (probably David's brother) at the same place and in the same month.

Urania and David had a first child, believed to be Truman S. Wood, soon after their marriage i.e. in 5 August 1829. According to later census's in USA, Truman was born in Lower Canada, which agrees with the statement on his Obituary that he was born in Sutton Township. In fact the 1831 census for Sutton, Lower Canada, for David Wood, confirms 2 children under the age of 6[2].

The family moved to Syracuse, New York, probably in 1832[3]. It was here (Syracuse) that Urania's husband David passed away at a very young age, reportedly in 1835[4]. This same reference (Truman's Obituary) makes reference to Truman's "younger brothers and sisters", which lends credibility to the possible additional children mentioned above. At some point after 1835, the family moved to Jay, Essex County, New York. The Wood family seems to have moved there together, since Urania's sister Angeline and her husband Silas Wood also appeared there per the 1840 Census. And a "Stephen Wood" born in Canada also had a family in that town (1855 NY State Census), so perhaps this was another brother of Silas and David Wood. And there was also a Claudius D. Wood or "C. D. Wood" resident (1855 NY State Census) in Jay, Essex County, NY. (In later years he moved to Gordon, Minnesota). There is also a "Rufus Wood" boarding in Jay, NY in 1855, and b. 1831, who together with Claudius might be brothers or cousins of Truman.

Sadly, Urania passed away in 1845 at the age of only 34 and was interred in Jay Central Cemetery, Essex County, New York[5]. With both parents gone, it explains the challenge of tracking their young children as they were relocated elsewhere in Essex County.
