Biography

Confederate Soldier K 62 SC infantry

Anderson was born about 1834. He is the son of Jim Chappell and Abigail Boren. Ance was in the 62nd Regiment company K North Carolina Troops along with brothers Andrew Jackson “AJ” and Elias Earl Chappell. AJ, Ance, and Earl all got sick while serving the confederate army, and they were in the hospital together in Greenville, Tennessee. AJ survived the illness, Earl did not. AJ survived only to be captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. He was imprisoned at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. AJ died at Camp Douglas from erysipelas, a skin infection caused by Streptococcus Bacteria. He was buried in the mass grave, aka the Confederate Mound, in Chicago Illinois. It contains the remains of 6,000 confederate soldiers who were prisoners of war at Camp Douglas. A.J. Chappell’s name is listed on the memorial. Ance fled from the hospital on Greenville, TN and was listed as a deserter on his military records. This was a smart decision, as it most likely saved his life. Had he not fled, he would have been captured alongside his brother AJ and taken to Camp Douglas where his chance of survival was slim.
