Biography

For many years, Magdalene Chastain has been shown as a daughter of Pierre Chastain, Jr., and the wife of Jean Gevaudan. Although lacking in documentation, this speculative lineage was included in Pierre Chastain and His Descendants. However, recent information has come to light that proves Jean Gevaudan’s wife, and the mother of his children, was named Phoebe and that she later married John Stinson.

On 13 November 1787, in Buckingham County, Virginia, the division of John Jividen’s estate was forced by a lawsuit in which “Thomas Gevoden, Joseph Gevoden, by Samuel Allen his Guardian, Joseph Fore and Ann his wife, Wm. Jeffries & Mary his wife” sued “John Gevoden, son and heir at Law of John Gevoden decd and John Stinson and Phebe his wife which said Phebe was widow and administratrix of the said John Gevoden decd.”[1]

In 1797, Thomas Jivoden was involved in litigation with Joseph Foree. On 12 August 1797, Phoebe Stinson swore that “at the time of the division of the Estate of her deceased husband John Jevedan, when the negroes Jack & Bob were allotted to Thomas Jeveden, she was apprehensive that the negroes would be carried & conveyed away from him by Mr. Ecekiel Hendrik his father in law, & some other persons.” She also specifically stated that “Thomas Jevoden is her son & Joseph Fore her son in law.”[2]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Magdalene by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Magdalene:

Lawsuit was filed under Foree ( not faure) and jourdan ( not Jividen). There were prominent families many infact including a Thomas Jourdan who was the son of a John jourdan. Furthermore I am a dna descendent of jean Jividen and I have dna matches to Chastain which makes no sense if phebe is my actual gggm. Something is way off here.

It was indexed and filed under Jourdan in the modern era. This was clearly a misreading as the actual documents in the lawsuit make it clear that it was the Jividen family (spelled various ways, like the Foree/ Fore/Faure family).

How do you descend from John Jividen? There are numerous, actual, connections between the Jividens and the Chastains. It is entirely possible that your connection with the Chastains comes in on another generation.
