She immigrated to the United States in 1868 with the John G. Holman Company. Due to quarantine from sickness, she had to push a handcart from Florence, Nebraska to Manti, Utah with her three children. This unnamed handcart group was the last handcart company ever to make this thousand-mile trek.[18]
Soon after arriving in Utah, she married Nels Nelsen. They lived in Manti, Utah. He was a polygamist and had a second wife.
After Nels passed away, she moved to Koosharem, Utah to live with her daughter.
Karen passed away at an age of eighty-one on May 2, 1906 in Koosharem, Utah. She is buried in the Koosharem Cemetery.[19]
