Biography

Misses Ella and Ida Chubb entertained a company of friends Friday evening. The gathering was given the appellation, "find-me-if-you-can-party".[1]

An Evening's Fun -- The red, white and blue social given last Friday evening by the Epworth League <Cathryn's note: The Epworth League is a Methodist young people's group.> at the home of Misses Ella and Ida Chubb was attended by about one hundred fifty of the members and their friends. The house had been beautifully decorated with flags, bunting and streamers and the amusements of the evening were based on the idea of patriotism. Flags had been hidden all over the house and each guest was entitled to one as a souvenir and the search for them afforded considerable amusement. Refreshments were served throughout the evening and altogether the affair was not only one of the largest, but also one of the pleasantest social events of the year. [2]

Easter Tea -- The Misses Ella and Ida Chubb gave an Easter tea Saturday evening in honor of their cousin, Miss Roberts of Kansas. <Cathryn's note: Miss Roberts might have been Daisy D. Roberts who was living with the family along with her father Abner in the 1900 census.> Twelve young ladies were present to partake of their hospitality. The evening was spent in music and games and the guests carried away with them, besides pleasant memories, a dainty souvenirs symbolical of the Eastertide.[3]

A Teacher at the Chautauqua

Will Teach at Chautauqua -- Miss Ella Chubb will leave Friday for Boulder, Colorado, where she has the position tendered her to teach in the Chautauqua during the summer. Her work will be teaching lace making and embroidery, both of which she is proficient in. She will be accompanied by Lillie and Lettie Maine of Yorkville.[4]

About Gladys Forrester, AKA Chubb

Miss Ella Chubb was visiting in Des Moines, she was struck with the appearance on a little four-year-old girl at the Des Moines home for friendless children and brought the child home with her. William C. Chubb and Mary Roberts Chubb adopted Gladys Forrester. The girl was eventually returned to her mother, but later came back to the Chubb's and was subsequently sent to the Mitchellville reform school for girls. <Cathryn's note: Please see Gladys Forrester's profile for the entire story with sources.>

Written by her Mother, Mary E. Roberts Chubb

"My daughter Ella was assistant supervisor of nurses here at the hospital-she liked her work but when on regular duty her hours were long and it left me alone so much-so this summer (1930) she is at home to assist me. We have a large house across the street from the Hospital and have been taking care of the friends of the patients who come to be near their loved ones while they are in the Hospital."
