Augustine Claiborne of "Windsor," was born in King William county, Virginia, the son of Captain Thomas Claiborne, of "Sweet Hall," (born 16 Dec 1680) and Anne West Fox (born 20 May 1684) both natives of King William Co., VA Around 1740, Augustine married Mary Herbert (born 25 Aug 1728), daughter of Buller Herbert ^[1]

As early as 18 Oct 1742 Augustine and Mary settled in Surry County giving the name "Windsor" to thier new home. Later, due to changes in county lines, the residence was in Sussex county. Augustine produced a license to practice law in Jul 1742 and again qualified for practice in Oct 1746.

Colonel Claiborne was a Burgess from Surry County 1748-54. He qualified as vestryman of Albemarle Parish on 21 May 1751 and became the first clerk of Sussex County when it was formed in 1754. He served as Clerk for twenty-two years, until 1776, and was succeeded by his son William. He was also a member of the Committee of Safety for Sussex in 1775.

Augustine took the oaths as a Major of foot in the militia on 21 Nov 1749 and again on 18 Aug 1752. On the creation of Sussex County he took the oaths as Colonel of militia on 9 Sep 1754 and as County Lieutenant on 19 Mar 1767. On 29 Nov 1777 he was appointed one of several residents of Sussex County to execute the Act for clothing the troops of Virginia on Continental service.

Apparently, Colonel Claiborne did not engage in combat during the American Revolutionary War, however he is recognized for his patriotic service by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ancestor # A022034, for his Civil Service duties as Deputy Clerk of Court, Member of Committee of Safety, and rendering of material aid. Their records indicate he was born January 14, 1720, in King William county, Virginia and died in Windsor, Sussex county, Virginia on May 3, 1787. ^[2]

According to the website "Virginians" [www.virginians.com/redirect.htm?topics&3490] Augustine was head of a household of nine whites and 30 blacks in Sussex County in 1782. He had twenty-five slaves in Dinwiddie County that same year. His will was recorded 17 May 1787.

Deed of Indenture

The following link is a transcribed copy of a Deed between Carter Braxton and Augustine Claiborne. It was written on 11 Aug 1783 in King William County Virginia. It was recorded in Court on 18 Mar 1784.^[3]This deed names 40 persons enslaved by Braxton in payment for his debt to Augustine Claiborne for "two hundred & seventy four Thousand nine Hundred & fifty nine Pounds of Crops." ^[4]
