Biography

Jane was a Friend (Quaker)

Jane Clare is often seen as the daughter of William Clare and Mary Corey, born c.1640 in Scotland however there is no documentation of this at this time. Various records have led to speculation that she is the sister of Timothy Cleare. However, the frequently seen origins of Timothy Cleare are questionable as it can now be documented he came to Carolina from Maryland and prior to that possibly Nevis, West Indies.

Virgil T. Bogue has speculated that she is the daughter of a Calvin Clark but does not give his reasoning.[1] Jane is also written as Jeane and Jean in numerous Perquimans records of the period.

Jane is believed to have had five husbands. Some have speculated about the conflation of two women (see Research Notes) but most are of the opinion that various records and circumstantial evidence point to one woman named Jane having had five husbands over the course of her life.

Husbands

Bogue researchers Virgil T Bogue, Flora Deming Bogue, and Jean Leeper appear to be in basic agreement on the husbands:

1. William Bogue - only Leeper speculates on the origins of William Bogue and this is speculation absent documentation.

2. William or John or __________ Moore m about 1675 according to some

3. James or ______________ Loadman - Note: the marriage to Loadman appears to have little documentation other than his name recorded in the marriage record of Jane and Richard Byer. According to Virgil T. Bogue, Jane and James were married at the time they came to North Carolina.

4. Richard Byer m ____ of January 1682/83[2]

5. William Newby m 6 Aug 1701[3][4]

It should be noted that Virgil T. Bogue's writing appears to become very confused when he discusses the marriage to John Moore as at one point he writes he marries Jane Edwards, daughter of Peter Edwards of Isle of Wight whose will proved 8 Oct 1638 names her (highly unlikely a will proved 1638 names someone probably not yet born).

Children

With William Bogue

With ________ Moore

  • William Moore is documented by a deed 12 Aug 1701, "Jeane Bier, widow, do give my son, Wm. Moore, a Patent of Land from me and my now husband, William Newby, after the death of both of us."[5]

With James Loadman

  • James who died 1694, William Bogue (his half-brother) the administrator of his estate.[6] Birth record not yet located, perhaps born in Virginia. James is also noted in a 1687 deed, "I, Jean Loadman, do give my son James, one cow and calf."[7] It appears James is meant to be represented by this profile for a James Loadman however the profile may be conflating father and son of the same name (see dates).

Research Notes

Conflation of two Janes? Virgil T Bogue makes note of research (1944) of Leslie R Zoellner who is said to have had records showing that Richard Byer (Baird) had two wives bearing the name of Jane: 1st, Jane Loadman, who probably m. 1st William Bogue, by whom she had ch., William, Robert and Margaret, and whom he m 1 Jan 1682/83 and who probably died between 1682-88; 2nd Jane Wogell (Nogell), widow of Lawrence Nogell, who d 16 Dec 1685 whom he m 8 Oct 1686, and who, after the death of Richard Byer m William Newby. Virgil Bogue generally discredits this interpretation of documents with a discussion and citations in his work (see Sources) in Book II, Page 194-5.

The old notes below are being removed as verified, discounted or entered above.

Caution: some reports that she wed Joseph Robinson on 2-12-1711, and Thomas Jessop on 12-14-1722. This Jane was already dead at that time. (She d. 1701) That Jane is possibly the daughter of this Jane's brother, Timothy, or our Jane's niece.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jane by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jane:

Looks like the year 1685, (or 1686) is wrong in this "Research Notes" paragraph - a marriage after her death date. Re: 2nd Jane Wogell (Nogell), widow of Lawrence Nogell, who d 16 Dec 1685 whom he m 8 Oct 1686, and...

Thanks, Bob Cole

Clare-83 and Clare-87 appear to represent the same person because: Same person to be merged removing name Edwards. Keep data from Clare-87.

Jane Edwards was the daughter of Peter Edwards of Isle of Wight who died 1638. Jane Clare (Clear, Cleare) is not the same person.

Is there any documentation of the marriage to Nogwell? It does not appear in the research of Virgil T Bogue nor Flora Bogue Deming nor Jean Leeper. He should probably be detached for lack of any documentation.

This profile would benefit from sources which meet the pre-1700 sourcing requirements. The Hinshaw citation does not say to what it pertains.
