Witnesses to the marriage were William Thomas Little, saddler of Southbridge, Elizabeth Clark, Frederick Clark, hairdresser of Christchurch, R.H Clarke publican and Harriett A. Matthews (sister). In 1878 Henry's butcher shop was on the corner of High Street and Tamutu Road, Southbridge, opposite the Leeston Hotel. «b»«i»HENRY ALFRED CLARKE [305] married ELLEN MATILDA MATTHEWS on the 20 October, 1876. It was his first marriage and ONLY marriage according to a descendant of Annie Burbridge - HENRY A. CLARK did NOT marry Annie Burbridge - lived with her but did not marry. «b»«/i» «b»«i»Descendants of both Henry & Ellen Clark and the Burbridge descendants have thoroughly searched over the years and there is no record and her direct descendant from her eldest child, Lillie (not Henry Clark's daughter) confirmed that to me. The birth records for Daisy and for Leonard Pierson Clark say Clark, (those two could be what some use to say were illegitimate) as Henry Clark never married for a second time to Annie B.. It is believed that Henry took responsibility for Len and Daisy, as they were his, however, no marriage. Sandra Tocker 25 June 2009«/b»«i» Very soon after the death of Ellen Henry headed for the goldfields of Australia and here met Annie Burbridge. «b»«i».
- 'very soon after Ellen's death, Henry headed for the goldfields in Australia and here met Annie Burbridge.' «b»«/i» «b»«i»I believe that to be gossip now (or explaining away Annie Burbridge someway in the Duffy family) as Alfred, Frederick and eventually Hettie went to school in Darfield, South Island, N.Z. after their mother's death. What actually killed Henry's wife, Ellen was the contaminated water supply in Leeston, Canterbury, N.Z. according to the doctor's report by the old Leeston Health Board records. That water supply also killed another, and Henry's sons were also very sick. I don't believe Henry went to Australia after her death - 1. He had no finance to do so - 2. he may have around the time Daisy was born. I have numerous old letters dating from 1876 from Ellen to her sister. Richard Henry Clarke & Henry Alfred Clarke were partners for a while in butcher shop, Leeston, N.Z. Richard lived with Henry & Ellen at some stage. At the time it is believed Richard Henry Clarke was an ex-publican and a bankrupt. Sandra Tocker 25 June 2009«/b»«i» It is believed that Henry returned to NZ about 1888 and that Annie Burbridge and Lily arrived there the same time or joined him soon after.«tab».
