Josiah Clarke was born about 1760 in Frederick, Maryland.[1] Although census records suggest he was probably born in the 1770s. He was a son of Elias Clarke and Linnea Luckett.
On December 13, 1798, Josiah married Jane Adams in Culpeper, Virginia, United States [2] Together they had ten children; six sons and four girls.[3] Their known children are Elias and Moses.

Josiah was a soldier in the war of 1812-1814, serving in a company raised in Virginia, commanded by Capt. Charles Shackelford.[3]
His wife, Jane died in her middle age and was buried on the farm in Virginia.[3]

On January 18, 1825, Josiah married Lucy Menifee in Fauquier, Virginia, United States.[6] Together they had ten children; eight sons and two daughters.[3] The following are their known children: Margaret, Henry, Frances, Hannah, Samuel, Lemote, Adaline, and Thomas.
In 1835, Josiah and his family left Virginia to Ohio in a covered wagon and a team of horses, the party numbering thirteen persons. He settled on 80 acres of timbered land. Josiah lived on this land until he died in his nineties in about 1850.[3]
Josiah Clarke died before 1850 in Coshocton, Ohio.
