Due to his weight of 90 lbs, he enlisted in the 1st NC Junior Reserves in 1864 and was based in Raleigh to protect the city from invasion. His company served at the Battle of Bentonville, however, he stated that he was kept in Raleigh.

As the last surviving veteran of the Civil War in Stanly County, he gave an interview to the local Albemarle paper: The Stanly News and Press in Jan. 1940. In the article, he talks about his father, Barnett, retiring from the Confederate army in 1864 (at the age of 50) and walking back home from Fort Fisher, where he was stationed from '61-'64. Nelson didn't drink nor smoke. He applied for a pension from the State of NC in 1922 for his service in the Confederate army. He recieved $11 per month.

Nelson is buried in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetary.

Occupation: farmer. Property was located along the NW side of US HWY 52, just north of Albemarle, NC.

Just wondered if he is set to "Anonymous" on purpose or if it happened accidentally?
